Sketchbook is delighted to be one of the venues for Evanston Made, a city-wide one-day open studio event! From 12 - 5 on Saturday, June 4, one or more of the artists will be available to chat about their work. The work will continue to be on display through the month of June.
For this first exhibition at Sketchbook, we chose artists connected to the brewery in a variety of ways. Note that most of the work is for sale.
Alice George is a visual artist and poet. She began exploring text and image while pursuing her MFA in Writing from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago (2001). She shares a studio with Beth Adler; this studio will also be exhibiting a wider range of Alice’s work on June 4, at Adler George Studio, 1125 Florence Ave. Sketchbook Connection: Alice is co-owner of Sketchbook Brewing Co, along with her partner Shawn Decker. Some of her work is being adapted for use for Sketchbook's bottle labels. ON DISPLAY: Large work on paper and four collagraph prints.
Kathy Pilat is an artist and educator. Her series Inventions was created by cutting and reassembling old, scientifically illustrated, encyclopedias to concoct machines, apparatuses, and environments of questionable function. Sketchbook Connection: Kathy is a co-founder of Sketchbook; you can find Kathy and her husband Mike Ensdorf tending bar together. ON DISPLAY: paper collages.
Mark Bowers is a Visual Arts teacher at New Trier High School. He received a M.A.T. from the Rhode Island School of Design and a B.F.A from Michigan State University in painting. His highly detailed oil paintings, which embrace the Midwestern narrative landscape have been exhibited both regionally and nationally. He is represented by Ann Nathan Gallery, Chicago. Sketchbook Connection: Mark contributed design thinking to our first alley-side facility; his sketch can be found on some vintage t-shirts. ON DISPLAY: two paintings on wood panels.
Matthew LaFleur has a BFA in Illustration from Syracuse University, a terrific program and a great school, especially if you like the color orange. He currently live snorth of Chicago with my two art- and music-loving daughters where he has been doing illustration for 15 years. Sketchbook Connection: Matt is active in the Evanston home brewing scene and has contributed his design skills to numerous beer-related projects. ON DISPLAY: beer label design.
Joe Taylor is an Evanston-based artist and illustrator. Sketchbook Connection: Joe created the graphic logo central to Sketchbook’s identity. ON DISPLAY: Mural on back door.
